Judicial Clerkships for Articled Clerks

Starting 4 July 2017, the Cayman Islands Courts will offer a new Judicial Clerkship programme for Articled Clerks with local law firms, which will count towards their legal training requirements. Announcing the programme, the Chief Justice, Hon. Anthony Smellie explained that it was developed by the Judicial Education Committee (JEC) jointly with the Caymanian Bar Association (CBA) and local law firms.

Press Release - CBA 27th Anniversary Gala

The Caymanian Bar Association (CBA) held its 27th Anniversary Gala on 12 September 2015 at the Marriott Hotel. Winston Connolly MLA and past Council Member of the CBA was the master of ceremonies for the evening. With over 170 guests in attendance representing members from the CBA, the Cayman Islands Law Society, the Judiciary, the Premier and other Members of the Legislative Assembly, the event was one of the largest ever held by the CBA. During the evening the fifteen Caymanians who were admitted as attorneys in 2014 were honoured and presented with awards by the Honourable Premier Alden McLaughlin MBE.

Small Claims Handbook (5th Edition) Released

Brett Basdeo, CBA Member and former Vice President, has authored the fifth edition of the "Small Claims Handbook". Mr. Basdeo, who also authored the fourth edition released in 2010, stated that "the Handbook is meant to assist the general public in pursuing legal remedy through the Summary Court of the Cayman Islands. The 83 page handbook is "a quick reference guide that provides simple, lucid and easy to understand explanations and instructions, drawn from the Summary Court Rules 2004." “The Complaints Commission used to get at least three requests a week for the handbook, exclusive of online downloads,” Acting Complaints Commissioner Bridgette Von Gerhardt recalled. “This edition will help to meet that demand, and we thank Maples and Calder and Mr. Basdeo for doing such a thorough and professional job.”

Farewell to Justice Mottley

Accolades honouring retiring stalwart of regional jurisprudence, Cayman Appeals Court Justice Elliott Mottley, reflected a legacy of regional service that “only a very few lawyers and judges can claim,” in judgments that have “enriched the law law books of Belize, the TCI and the Cayman Islands.” Such distinctions were echoed in ceremonies held just prior to his departure last week (5th and 6th May), hosted respectively by the judiciary and members of the legal fraternity.

Chief Justice addresses the Choice of Venue for Insolvency Proceedings at INSOL Conference

New Council Elected for 2015-2016

The Caymanian Bar Association elects a new Council Members of the Caymanian Bar Association have returned Abraham Thoppil as President at its recent Annual General Meeting held on 25 February 2015. Outgoing Vice President Brett Basdeo was succeeded by Nick Rogers. Neil Timms Q.C. was returned as Treasurer and Nick Joseph was chosen as Secretary. Returning Council members Anna Goubault and Stephen Watler have been joined by newly elected Erik Bodden, Nikhil Jha, Ridhiima Kapoor and Alison Maxwell.
